मन्दाकिनीं नदीं रम्यां प्राङ्मुखास्ते ययुस्तदा । प्रदक्षिणं च कुर्वाणाः चित्रकूटं महागिरिम् ॥

श्रीमद्वाल्मीकिरामायणे अयोध्याकाण्डे त्रयोदशोत्तरशततमस्सर्गः (३ श्लोक)

This shloka mentions that Bharata, and the residents of Ayodhya who followed him, performed pradakshina to the great mountain, Chitrakoot.

Performing namaskar and appropriate salutations to great hills, rivers etc. is indeed an ancient tradition of Indians. They realize such holy articles as Divya-vibhutis of Paramaatma and hence serve them with care.

In contrast, the people of modern age consider such life-saving natural resources as “lifeless” and destroy them in the greed for wealth.
