Replying to JabaliMaharshi’s suggestion to return to Ayodhya, ShriRaama says these memorable words:

“If I behave as per your teachings and deviate from the path of Dharma, then this whole world will also do the same citing me as an example. This is because people always follow those occupying higher positions in the society”.

ShriRaama is here repeating the same shloka in Bhagavatgita “यद्यदाचरति श्रेष्ठस्तत्तदेवेतरो जनः।
स यत् प्रमाणं कुरुते लोकस्तदनुवर्तते॥”. Everybody should follow the Dharma as prescribed for them by the shastras. More importantly, those in higher positions of the society. This is because, an adharmic leader will not only destroy himself, but also his followers.

If only our society remembered these priceless teachings from ShriKrishna and ShriRaama, today we would not see so many irresponsible people leading a life of their will. We can easily cite many glaring examples of this phenomenon in the society today:

  1. Since celebrities dress scantily so do others citing it as “fashion”.
  2. Since media promotes nudity and open prostitution (culture of living-in relations etc.), so does the society and as a result we are seeing an exponential explosion in abortion rates. What can be a more ruthless and barbaric act than killing a helpless, harmless, extremely young with immense potential, and an amazingly beautiful, cute baby?
  3. Since top administrators are corrupt, so are the sub-ordinates.

The most ironical thing is that such people with absolutely no values and morals, go on to villages in the name of social service! They may indeed increase the economic status of the villagers, but definitely destroy the cultural and moral values of them!!
